Pass / No Pass Policies

No course in any language at any level that is taken in order to fulfill the Weinberg language requirement can be taken Pass / No Pass (P/N). Students in colleges other than Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences should check with their advisers to see whether any language course taken for Pass/No Pass will satisfy the language requirement of their college or degree, or the requirements for a major or a minor in those colleges.

First- and Second-Year Language Courses

Both Weinberg and non-Weinberg students must abide by the following policies:

P/N Not Permitted

Pass/No Pass registration is not allowed in any of the following first- and second-year language courses regardless of whether students take the course in fulfillment of the language requirement or not. Language courses require daily work in and outside of the classroom; this rule is to ensure that all students come prepared to class to ensure adequate progress. Language programs that do not allow Pass/No Pass registration are: 

  • Ancient Greek
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Latin
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

P/N Maybe Permitted

Pass/No Pass registration in first- and second-year language courses may be allowed in the following language programs if the student is not using the language course to fulfill the Weinberg language requirement or to pursue a language major or minor requirement in Weinberg: 

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Czech
  • Hebrew
  • Hindi-Urdu
  • Polish
  • Russian
  • Swahili
  • Turkish
