Global Goals, Global Languages - Central States 2025

The 2025 Central States Conference, themed "Global Goals, Global Languages," emphasizes the integration of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with language education to address global issues and foster skills like critical thinking and intercultural competence. The conference features over 150 sessions, workshops, and language immersion opportunities, including a keynote by Dr. Megan Ferry and presentations by notable educators like the 2025 ACTFL Teacher of the Year, Kei Tsukamaki. The event concludes with a free registration to the 2026 conference in Chicago.

Spring 2025 CALPER Professional Development Webinar Series

CALPER is offering a new webinar series taking place each spring, titled “Advances in World Language Pedagogy-The CALPER Professional Development Webinars”. These webinars will be led by specialists with expertise in a variety of pedagogical approaches that can be used to support and enhance the teaching and learning of world languages, including less commonly taught languages.

Northwestern Practicum: Supporting Student Success

The Searle Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning has organized this year’s University Practicum based on a topic determined by a survey of Northwestern Instructors, who are looking to enhance academic rigor and student resilience enriched by empathy and equity. The practical, flexible, and supportive online practicum includes live sessions on redefining, creating an environment for, facilitating, and assessing student success, complemented by learning labs, a faculty panel, and individual consultations.

Northwestern: Generative AI 101

Generative AI 101 is a six-week professional development program, organized by Northwestern IT Teaching and Learning Technologies. All Northwestern instructors ready to begin exploring GenAI are encouraged to apply. A cohort of 15 to 20 instructors will be selected to join the program's first iteration. Generative AI 101 is an extension of TLT’s educational series on Generative AI and Teaching for Fall 2024.

MOOC: Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning 

Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning is a MOOC designed by the National Foreign Language Resource Center- University of Hawai'i at Manoa as a 5-module open-enrollment self-study course for language educators beginning to learn about Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). Successful learners will be able to describe essential features of high quality PBLL and to generate high-quality ideas for projects using the Product Square. A digital badge is available for candidates fulfilling course requirements.

2025 Chicago Language Symposium: AI and World Language Teaching

The CLS will be held at DePaul University on Saturday, April 12th. This year’s theme is AI and World Language TeachingInformation about the CLS website and the keynote speaker will be announced later. 

Please consider submitting a proposal if you have a project that can contribute to the discussion of how language educators can leverage AI technology in world language learning/teaching context.

MWALLT Conference 2025: Strengthening Pathways

The Midwest Association for Language Learning Technology (MWALLT) is seeking proposals for its 2025 fully online conference to be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Presentations will be delivered from your remote location and shared with conference participants via three zoom streams, managed by The Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  

The conference theme is "Strengthening Pathways."  We seek proposals relating to K-16 pathways, internships and study abroad, life-long learning, as well as other pathways relating to the teaching of languages and cultures through the integration of technology. While proposals should exhibit an understanding of current trends in language pedagogy, the focus should be on praxis rather than on research. The goal is to provide practical information about emerging technologies and approaches that can be easily implemented in the language classroom.

Canvas Accessibility Workshops for World Language Faculty

Northwestern Teaching and Learning Technologies are organizing in-person workshops to help instructors achieve a Mission Accessible alert-free status in their Canvas course sites before the start of Winter quarter. Below are the dates, times, and locations for both sessions:

12th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language

The National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (NSSHL) is an intellectual forum for the discussion and advancement on education and research to better support the strengths and diverse pedagogical needs of Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States.

The 12th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language will be held from Monday, May 12 to Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. It will take place in person and follow the regular format of keynotes, conference presentations, academic panels, and workshops to allow attendees to share ideas and knowledge about the different aspects of Spanish heritage language teaching, practices, and research.

Language OER Conference 2025

The Open Language Resource Center at the University of Kansas is seeking proposals for the fifth annual Language OER Conference to be held Saturday, March 8, 2025 via Zoom.

The International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) and the Japan Association for Language Education & Technology (LET) are pleased to announce the Call for Proposals for the 8th FLEAT (Foreign Language Education and Technology) Conference in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. FLEAT 8 will be sponsored by IALLT, LET, the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) and the Center for Language and Technology (CLT) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Also, information about the conference hotel and campus housing options has been updated on the website.
CALICO 2025 - Call for Proposals

The CALICO conference features five types of presentations, including hands-on workshops, 30-minute presentations on empirical research or classroom reports, panel presentations, technology showcase presentations, and poster presentations. The deadline for submitting your abstract proposal is October 31, 2024. All proposals should be submitted using the CALICO website. Presenters will be notified of acceptance in early December.

The call for proposals invites submissions on language and transcultural learning, emphasizing topics like disruptive technologies in education, inclusive computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and augmented/virtual realities. Key themes include generative AI, digital literacies, heritage language learning, and various learning modalities, along with the role of technology in language revitalization and virtual exchanges for intercultural interactions.

IALLT October Webinar: From Textbook to Homework: A Collaborative Journey in Developing Our Spanish OER Projects with LibreTexts

Date: Friday, October 4, 2024, 10:00am PT / 11:00am MT / 12:00pm CT / 1:00pm ET

Presenters: Alejandro Lee, Nancy Ballesteros, Sarah Harmon, and Cristina Moon

In this presentation, four instructors from California community colleges will discuss their transition from traditional commercial textbook bundles to Open Educational Resources (OER) and innovative homework solutions in Spanish language instruction. They will focus on three collaborative projects supported by the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges Open Educational Resources Initiative (ASCCC OERI) and LibreTexts: Entrada Libre (2020), Tarea Libre (2022), and Tarea Libre 2 (expected summer 2024). Attendees will learn about the collaborative process, from conception to implementation, and the challenges faced during the development of the materials.
The speakers will share valuable insights into OER development and offer actionable takeaways. The presentation aims to renew enthusiasm for reshaping the future of Spanish language education through innovative solutions. Emphasis will be placed on the creation of open and accessible resources that align with the ASCCC OERI IDEA framework of inclusion, diversity, equity, anti-racism, and accessibility.
