PD IMMERSION WEEK I: GENERATIVE AI IN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION
The Weinberg Language Resource Center (LRC), the Media and Design Studio (MADS), Northwestern IT Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) and the Searle Center for Advancing of Teaching and Learning at Northwestern University, in collaboration with the Council on Language Instruction, organized the Immersion Week: Generative AI in Language Instruction (December 3-6, 2024) with the goal to provide faculty and graduate students with the foundational knowledge and curated resources on AI-based tools and its potential applications for language teaching and learning on our campus. Dr. Ricardo Court, Weinberg's Assistant Dean for Academic Integrity and Undergraduate Research, offered thought-provoking opening remarks, and Dr. Kevin Gaugler, Assistant Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Marist College was its engaging and inspiring keynote speaker.
Our stellar presenters included: Dr. Rachel Goc, Learning Engineer (TLT); Matthew Taylor, Director (MADS); Chin-Hung Chang, Associate Professor of Instruction in Chinese (Northwestern); Dr. Eun Hee Kim, Assistant Professor of Instruction in Korean (Northwestern); Dr. Franziska Lys, Professor of Instruction in German (Northwestern); Anna Luce, Lead Learning Engineer (TLT); Dr. Denise Drane, Senior Associate Director of Research and Innovation (Searle Center) and Eun Y. Sandoval-Lee, Project Administrator of Strategic Initiatives (Searle Center). Special thanks to our dedicated students, Asha Navaratnasingam, Amelia Stone, Yuka Sumi and Marilene van den Berg for accepting our invitation to share their perspectives on the use of GAI with us.
The program with a description of the individual sessions, as well as the recordings (password-protected via NetID), PPT presentations and additional resources for further exploration of the different topics covered, are shared below.

"HANDS-ON WITH COPILOT"This workshop, focused on the use of Copilot from the instructor perspective, expanded on examples presented in a fall quarter seminar series by allowing participants to directly interact with various NU-approved generative artificial intelligence ("Gen AI") tools. Participants learned how to use AI to develop lesson plans and materials and to create and shape various forms of multimedia for teaching use.📅 Dates: February 17, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM CT/ February 27, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM CT |

"COPILOT FOR STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS"This workshop explored the potential uses of Copilot by your students, both for specific assignments and as a supplemental study aide. Our previous workshop on faculty use of Copilot provided an excellent opportunity to workshop ideas and to continue the conversation.📅 Dates: April 28, 2025, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM CT, May 8, 2025, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM CT |

"STUDENT PERSPECTIVES AND FUTURES"This was the final event of this year's deep dive into Artificial Intelligence and Language Instruction. The workshop reviewed the latest student perspectives in the use of AI for learning and assignments, as well as opinions about instructor's use of AI tools for the creation of teaching materials and assessments. This data was used to brainstorm ideas for future curricular design.📅 June 5, 10:00-11 AM CTPresenter: Matthew Taylor, Director, Media and Design Studio Organizers: Media and Design Studio and Language Resource Center If you're considering integrating AI tools into your classroom, we've created the below document with guiding questions informed by student survey responses.
